capillarity or the power of absorption

I have just spent Saturday and Sunday doing another jazz workshop on the north Brittany coast...with 18 ladies of various ages and one brave man...
We have explored dangerous harmonies, frightening English and the concept of singing something in a different way to the way that it is written on a score sheet. They stepped bravely up to the line and even sang some stuff on their own from time to time. I love doing it, but it is exhausting...like being on stage for six hours a day.
I came home and Darling Daughter was playing the piano and singing. In times past, I have bitten my tongue and sat on it and run off into other rooms to prevent myself from interfering too much in her musical development. I have played and sung myself, knowing that she was listening, and dropped little hints, but tried to stay hands off and allow her to blossom.
I washed up this evening, listening to her voice soar and dip and improvise effortlessly. She is nearly there. And she has done it herself...

That is the rarest and most wonderful gift a mother, anyone, can give. To allow another to earn their own way, and thereby take all the credit.

Huzzah for both of you.

I must learn from your ability to back away and allow them to learn on their own. You are a woman to be admired :)

Sometimes it seems that no matter what they do, there is always that joy when we realize that they are figuring it out on their own. For me, that was the best part of parenthood.

I admire your ability to stand back and let her do it on her own. Restraint on your part, willing to take risks and make mistakes on her. Excellent.

thanks for your comments all
zhoen, your absence of pronoun allows both daughter and myself to take credit which is clever of you.

Dick, I find not saying anything difficult at times...

Marja Leena, to teach without seeming to is a challenge

Hexe It comes easier as they get older -you have no choice!

Mike oh yes I remember now, there are some joys in parenthood...

Dingo I could see a little flame burning and I knew that sometimes it is easy to extinguish it with too much interference

Even without being a parent, I know those moments of astonishment when a growing person, young or otherwise, is seen to have really blossomed, learned something, to be suddenly doing something effortlessly which they've been struggling with.

Well done you on all counts!
