A salutary tale

When ever I feel that life here in Brittany has not turned out exactly as I might have hoped, there is always the consolation that it all could have been a lot worse....

Wow. One never runs away from one's troubles, they come in the luggage.

My, what a coincidence. I’m a regular visitor to the Guardian site and I only stumbled upon this article a couple of days ago. Tragic and absorbing tale, made worse by the fact that it’s not a piece of fiction. I wonder what emotional traumas the son may have to face all over again in later life when and if the demons return to haunt him. I sincerely hope he is spared further pain.

Scary, and I'm afraid to say blackly hilarious. Really it was probably going to happen wherever they were, or at least it was going to end in some kind of disaster, just there was more space and scope for murder and concrete overcoats where they were. Delusional alcoholics with a tenuous grip on reality and daft moneymaking plans are not confined to the expat community.

I'm slightly put out that so many of the commenters on the Grauniad site said they knew people like this and wasn't it typical etc etc All this time I've lived here and nothing nearly so lurid has ever been brought to my attention, very disappointing. The biggest scandal hereabouts was my friend's husband running off with the vet's wife.

Seriously though, I do feel sorry for the son.
